A merchant of record provider takes the payment in its own name, collects and remits sales tax or VAT, and answers refunds and chargebacks, while the software company keeps the product. Profiles record what each provider publishes about the role it takes on, its pricing and its developer documentation. How the role works, and how it differs from a processor or a PayFac, is explained in merchant of record; profiles here include Paddle.

Questions

What does a merchant of record provider do? It is the legal seller to the buyer: it takes the payment, handles indirect tax and answers disputes, for a share of each sale.

Is a merchant of record the same as a payment facilitator? No. Businesses under a payment facilitator stay the sellers; with a merchant of record provider, the provider is the seller.

Where are payment platforms for marketplaces listed? In the embedded payments providers category.

Source: each provider’s own documentation, product pages, official announcements and filings, and official registers for licences, as linked in each profile. Fields a provider does not publish stay empty. How we build profiles: methodology.
