The FDIC on August 4, 2026 approved a deposit insurance application for Augustus National Bank, N.A., a newly chartered national bank to be headquartered in Dallas, Texas. The bank received preliminary conditional approval from the OCC on May 8, 2026. It plans to serve digital asset, technology and artificial intelligence companies, and to issue a stablecoin through a subsidiary if it is approved as a permitted payment stablecoin issuer under the GENIUS Act.

What the FDIC approval says

The FDIC says it “today approved a deposit insurance application for Augustus National Bank, N.A.”, describing it as a newly chartered national bank headquartered in Dallas. The OCC step came first: the organizers “received preliminary conditional approval on May 8, 2026.”

The customer base named in the release is “digital asset companies, high-net-worth individuals, artificial intelligence companies”, plus technology companies and international financial institutions.

Funding will come from “demand deposit accounts, for-benefit-of accounts, and correspondent accounts.” A for-benefit-of (FBO) account is an account a bank holds on behalf of another company’s customers, the structure most fintech programs sit on.

The bank also “plans to issue a stablecoin through a subsidiary”, if that subsidiary is approved as a permitted payment stablecoin issuer (PPSI) under the GENIUS Act. The approval order “expires if Augustus National Bank is not established within twelve months”.

What it means for fintechs

This is an insured bank, not an uninsured trust bank. It plans FBO accounts and correspondent accounts from the start, which are the account types a BaaS or payments program needs, and it pairs them with a planned stablecoin issuer in the same corporate family.

For teams mapping partner options, the criteria are in how to choose a sponsor bank and the existing partners are listed in the sponsor bank directory. The stablecoin part of the plan is conditional on a GENIUS Act approval the bank does not have yet.

What to watch

  • The twelve-month deadline. The FDIC order expires if the bank is not established within that period.
  • The OCC’s final charter step. The May 8, 2026 approval was preliminary and conditional.
  • The subsidiary’s application to become a permitted payment stablecoin issuer under the GENIUS Act.
